In April 2013, DC Water launched the Green Infrastructure Challenge, engaging firms to design innovative green practices that absorb rainwater. These practices, known as green infrastructure (GI), including installing green roofs, bioretention (rain gardens), rain barrels, permeable pavement, and other natural means to capture and infiltrate rainwater. In addition to reclaim the underutilized traffic islands as community assets, the design has integrated the stormwater management system that are aesthetic pleasing, provide social engagement opportunities, and celebrate the surrounding neighborhood characters.
